Arepas are a traditional and versatile dish from Latin American cuisine. Preparing them in the air fryer is a practical and healthy way to enjoy their flavor. This recipe yields the perfect arepa: crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and made with minimal oil.

Ingredients
- 1 cup pre-cooked cornmeal
- 1 cup warm water
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Oil spray or a few drops of oil for the air fryer
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the warm water with the salt.
- Gradually add the cornmeal while kneading with your hands until you get a smooth, lump-free dough.
- Divide the dough into 4 equal parts.
- Shape into balls and flatten with your hands to a thickness of 1 to 1.5 cm.
- Preheat the air fryer to 200°C (390°F) for 3–5 minutes.
- Boil the arepas in plenty of water for 7–8 minutes.
- Spray the air fryer basket with oil and place the arepas inside, spaced apart.
- Cook for 10 minutes at 200°C (390°F), then flip and cook another 5–8 minutes until golden.
- Let them rest outside the air fryer for 2–3 minutes.
- Slice open and fill as desired. We recommend reina pepiada filling—perfect for summer days.
